Is the safe in a hotel room really safe?

Thursday, May 4, 2017

A video posted on YouTube recently makes people think again this issue.

Many hotels are using this type of safe, which can be opened by either a PIN set by the customer or credit cards.

Different models of safe have several ways to open it, but mostly are:
1. A PIN code (between 4 and 10 digits)
2. Credit cards
3. Emergency Override key or Code. This is not available for the customer but only for the manager of the hotel.

The Override key or Code is used when:
1. The customer forgets the PIN code
2. The batteries are low and the electronic does not work
3. The customer leaves his room without unlocking the safe

Here comes the problem, if the hotel did not change the default override code, anyone can try to open the safe by guessing the override code.

Here is the video showing how to guess an override code and open the safe.

For safety, it is better to check if the safe can be opened by an override code, or ask the hotel manager if there is any override code. But it is better not to keep your valuables in the hotel safe.
